So I listened to Janelle Monaes “Django Jane” and came up with this one (amazing empowering song btw).
Because your body is your palace, your fortress, and since you’re the one living in it you’re the one who gets to decide. You can tattoo it, let your hair grow or shave it and put inside or do whatever else you want to do with it and it’s no one else’s business. It’s extremely hard sometimes to like the skin you live in because our society pushes this constant expectations of “you gotta be conventionally beautiful or you’re worthless” on you but that’s an ideology and can be unlearned. It’s not about being beautiful, it’s about being okay with yourself. It’s about not giving your appearance that much space in your mind. You can’t be a 100% what society demands in beauty but you can reach a state where you’re comfortable with that. Where you live your day to day life without thinking about it.
It can be a rough journey to get there and there will always be days when you catch yourself thinking toxic thoughts again but then you push them aside and go on. And they get quieter and quieter.
I never knew I could walk around with hairy legs and be okay with my crooked nose and everything, but now I get furious about how much I worried and dragged myself down about basically nothing. There’s so much freedom in not caring to much about what you look like.
Please never think you can’t have that. Just keep trying, delete accounts that feed you toxic ideas of beauty and it’s importance, tell people not to comment on your body, try to challenge yourself (e.g. I won’t shave this month) to realize a lot of the things you fear won’t happen or are not that bad, stop weighing yourself, tell people you trust so they can help you with all that, …
And if you are depressed or hate yourself and/or develop an eating disorder, please don’t be ashamed to get professional help. Asking fo help is reasonable and brave. You can get through this.
Find out what works for you and never stop believing that you are worthy of being okay with yourself ❤
