Happy pride to all my LGBTQIA+ humans 💕 51 years ago today queer black people and people of color rioted for LGBTQ+ rights and that was the first pride. Today, there are riots for the rights of black people and people targeted by racism in general, and just like the Stonewall Riots 51 years ago were necessary to get people to understand queer people are people, the riots today are, too. It’s sad and infuriating that that’s the case, but the least we as white or non-black people can do now is support their fight for their rights however we can. Start with yourself and your surroundings. Listen. Question every statement and move the police make. And if you’re queer, don’t think that automatically makes you free of internalized racism. We were all socialized in this society, we all at least subconsciously hold prejudices and if we don’t reflect upon that, we can’t change it. Accept you did wrong things in the past and that you will make mistakes again. Try and be better. It’s not easy or fun to be an ally, it’s just necessary. So please, while celebrating pride and being out and proud, which is wonderful, remember black people and other people of color made that possible. And even if they didn’t, they’d still deserve everything they’re asking for. They have for centuries. So no justice, no peace, defund the police.
